Interior Phase III

July 4, 2011 - After I completed work on the engine installation I started working on the interior again.  The first project was to pattern for the cushions.  I shopped around with my patterns and finally found a local shop that could make them on a reasonable time frame.  We had pretty specific desires about the foam to use and the fabric, so I ordered the fabric and foam.  When the materials arrived I marked the foam for cutting and took the foam and fabric over to the slip-cover shop on a Saturday morning.  I was quite surprised when I got a call the following Wednesday saying that the cushions were ready.  I went over and picked them up the morning of Thursday, June 24th.  As soon as I got home I put them on the boat and found that they fit perfectly.  Since the next phase of the interior build was painting and varnishing, I took the cushions back off and stored them in the house.

Once the cushions were off the boat I started work on finishing the main cabin.  The first step was to remove the lift out panels in the floor boards and put lifting rings into them.  I repainted one of the two panels after the lifting ring was installed.  Next I sanded out all the painted surfaces inside and rolled on the final coat of paint.  After I finished painting the furniture and bulkheads I bought some mahogany, set up may table saw and started making the trim pieces.  I needed "U" shaped trim for the bulkhead edges, "L" shaped trim for the edges of the berth/settees and fiddles with insets for the tops of the cabinets at the forward end of the main cabin.  I was glad that I had a sompound miter saw and a band saw because of some of the complex angles where trim pieces contacted the cabin sides.  At any rate, it took me two afternoons to make upand install the trim.  I also hung all the cabinet doors in the main cabin.  The picture below shows the main cabin with the trim installed.

The picture above is looking forward in the main cabin.  I installed the trim over two days.  At the end of the first day I coated the new trim with clear wood sealer.  This picture was taken right after I finished the second day's installation, but before I painted the new trim with wood sealer.  That is the reason for the color differences between the various bits of trim.  After I took this picture I coated all the trim with wood sealer.  Today I will put the first coat of varnish on.  The next phase of the interior work is to finish the forward compartment, which is the head.
