Morris Frances 26 Simple Half Hull Model with Teak Toe Rail
This model is a simple half hull of a Morris Frances 26 sloop.  The model was built at a scale of 3/4"=1' from lines I found in the book The World's Best Sailboats by Ferenc Mate.  The model is approximately 19.75" long.  The model includes a teak toe rail, teak trim on the rudder and the bow sprit.  It is mounted on a satin varnished cherry board.

The following pictures show the construction of the model.

Oct 28, 05 - Here is the model with the station frames, temporary deck and sheer and waterline planks in place.  The deck is temporary because this boat has a substantial bulwark.  The temporary deck at the level of the top of the hull is there to keep the models shape until it is fiberglassed.  Consequently I will remove the current deck after I fiberglass the hull and install the lower permanent deck.

Oct. 29, 05 - Well I got carried away and planked this model down to the waterline.  I will get back to it on Wednesday or Thursday after I finish planking the Swan 36 and Bristol 35.5 models that are ahead of this one on my work schedule.

Nov. 2, 05 - This afternoon I finished planking the hull for this model.  I will set it aside for a couple of days and then fiberglass the hull, before I remove the temporary deck and build the new, lower deck.

Nov 11, 05 - Since my last update I have fiberglassed, filled, faired and primed this model.  This is just the first coat of primer.  At this stage the primer is used primarily to highlight flaws in the surface of the hull.  This afternoon I will begin the process of spot filling and repriming the hull until I have a surface that is ready for paint.  I will also cut out the temporary deck and install the final lower deck creating the bulwark.  Tonight I will fiberglass the inside of the bulwark and the final deck.  The model is shown sitting on the cherry mounting board for another model, because I have not yet purchased the cherry for this model's mounting board.

Nov 20, 05 - I finished spot filling and priming on Firday and put the final gloss white topsides paint on this model.  This afternoon I painted the boot and whale stripes.  Since my last update I have also cut the propellor aperture into the keel and cut out the cherry mounting board.  All that remains to complete this model is to varnish the mounting board (varnish coat 1 is now drying) and to install the bow sprit and teak toe rail.  Because of the shape of the toe rail, I will install it as raw teak and varnish it in place.

Nov. 25, 05 - Since my last update I have installed the teak toe rail and nearly finished varnishing it.  I have also shaped the rudder and built the bow sprit (although it isn't shown above).  The mounting board now has three coats of varnish and needs about 4 more to be finished.  I expect to finish varnishing the toe rail this weekend.  After that is done I will repaint the whale stripe, install the sprit and teak trim on the rudder and paint the bottom of the boat.  I should have this model finished soon after December 1.

Dec 1, 05 - I am almost finished with this model.  Since my last update I have painted the rudder, applied the teak trim on the rudder, installed the bow sprit, painted the bottom and gotten the mounting board ready for its final coat of varnish.  All that remains is to sand the mounting board down, apply the final coat of rubbed effect varnish and then mount the model.  I intend to do the varnish work tomorrow.  I will let the final coat of varnish cure for 24 hours before I mount the model.  That means that the model will likely be finished on Sunday, December 4.
