Hinckley Bermuda 40 Custom Detailed Model

This model is a 3/4"=1' scale detailed model of a Hinckley Bermuda 40 Custom.  The hull is just over 30" in length.  I built this model from the original lines drawings.

This picture shows the back of the backplane after lamination as well as the front of the backplane with the frames and the first two sheer planks in place.  I showed the back of the backplane to show where I sign each model.  My signature is under a layer of fiberglass cloth set in epoxy.

Here the model has been planked down to the waterline.  I used 3/16" x 1/16" balsa to plank this model.  The yard stick shows the length of the model.

Here I have finished planking the model and sanded it fair.

This picture shows the model with the deck in place.  I have also cut out the footwell for the cockpit.  The deck is fully cambered based on the original drawings.

After I cut out the cockpit footwell I put a layer of fiberglass on the model and then filled and faired the model below the waterline.  Here I have also put the first coat of primer on below the waterline.

Here I have finished filling and fairing the topsides.

These two pictures show the model after I built the cabin house in balsa and then after I put a 1/64" thick styrene facing on the cabin house.  The styrene is used because it gives a smooth surface that needs minimal preparation before painting.  More importantly, I use the styrene because I can make very precise cutouts for ports and other fixtures.

Here I have put the first coat of topsides paint on the model.  I have also painted the deck and cabin house and installed the cenrter board.  For this model I actually cut the centerboard trunk into the backplane.  The model is shown sitting on the unfinished mahogany mounting board.

Here I have painted the deck contrast color.  I have also put the first few coats of varnish on the mounting board.

This picture shows the model with the boot stripe painted.  I have also installed the gloss varnished teak cockpit coaming and the two teak deck hatches.  You can also see the bronze wheel over the top of the cockpit coaming.

The model is starting to look more finished now that I have installed the varnished teak cabin eyebrow, the storm hood for the companionway and the aft teak deck hatch.

This picture chows the model sitting on the nearly finished mounting board.  The big change here is that I have installed the teak toe rail with chocks and the Hinckley stem fitting.  I have also painted the bottom.

Here she is nearly finished.  I have added the cabin top hand rails, bronze self-tailing genoa winch and the masts.

Here is the finished model with the anchor on its roller, the windlass and the teak dorade box with chromed cowl vent.  I have also installed the custom vinyl cove stripe with the Hinckley talaria.  The model is now mounted on the gloss varnished mahogany mounting board and the engraved brass nameplate is in place.
