Hinckley Sou'wester 30 Detailed model

I started building this model in late March 2004.  The first step was to get the lines.  Unfortunately The Hinckley Company no longer had the lines drawings for the Sou'wester 30 on file.  They suggested that I contact the Mystic Seaport Museum.  Mystic Seaport was able to provide me with partial lines in the form of five transverse section drawings.  I used those drawings and a copy of the original brochure (thank you Hinckley Yacht Brokerage) to draw and fair a set of lines for the boat.

As always, the first step was to cut out the backplane and frames.  This picture shows the backplane with the frames glued on and the planking finished down to the waterline.

Here The hull has been fully planked and sanded smooth.  The next step to to put a layer of fiberglass on the very fragile balsa.

Here the model after fiberglassing.  It is sitting on the patially varnished mounting board.

Here I part way through filling and fairing the topsides.  I have also built the cabin house in balsa and, although you can't see it, cut out the footwell for the cockpit.

Here I have put the facing on the cabinhouse and the cockpit.  I use 1/32" thick styrene to face the house and cockpit because it gives a nice smooth surface and is much easier to make sharply defined coutouts in it.

Here the topsides and cabin house have been primed.  The topsides are ready for their final paint.

This picture shows the model after I painted the topsides and the boot stripe.  I have also painted the deck and cabin house and primed the bottom.  The model is sitting on the gloss varnished mounting board.

This picture shows the model with the teak cockpit coaming, deck and cabin top teak hatches, companionway slide and the teak toe rail in place.

Here the model is almost finished.  I have put the gold leaf cove stripe and Hinckley talaria, ports, cabin top hand rail, stainless rub rail and the stub mast on.

Here is the completed model.
