Even though this is going to be a teak model, I built the backplane and frames from 1/16" thick balsa. The picture above shows the backplane with the frames glued on. I have also glued the one piece teak deck and transom on as well as the sheer plank. All the teak used for this model is cut from a single sheet of 1/16" veneer. The planking for the model was hand cut to approximately 1/4" width. I then milled each plank to a width of 0.200+/-0.003 inches. I used full length planks whenever possible.

Here is the model with the first 12 planks glues on. You can really see the rich color of the teak at this point.

In this picture the model is planked down to the waterline. Although most of the planks are full length, there are some wedged partial length planks at the bow and under the stern counter.

Here I have planked about half way down from the waterline to the garboard (the last plank above the keel). You can see that I have changed the planking pattern below the waterline. I do this for two reasons. First, the change in plank orientation makes the planks less curved. Second, this change in planking pattern serves to mark the waterline. This is not totally arbitrary on my part since I have seen real wooden boats planked this way.

Here I have finished planking the hull and have coated the entire hull with epoxy. I do this to fill any gaps between the planks. In addition, the epoxy strengthens the model. After the epoxy cures, I sand the hull back to wood so that the only epoxy remaining is between the planks. The remaining epoxy makes dark lines that delinieate the planking very nicely.

Here the model has had the epoxy sanded down and the first three coats of varnish applied. The model is shown sitting on the unfinished 12"x36" mahogany mounting board.

Here is the finished model. The model itself has 10 coats of gloss varnish. The last two coats are over the top of the gold boot stripe I put at the waterline. The mounting board has been teak stained to give it a more brown color and then finished with 6 coats of gloss varnish and a final coat of rubbed effect varnish.
