Bristol 35.5 Centerboard Sloop Half Model with Teak Toe Rail
This model is a simple half hull of a Ted Hood designed Bristol 35.5.  The model was built at a scale of 1/2"=1' and is 17.75" long.  The model is mounted on a satin varnished cherry board.  The model was built from the original Hood Design Group drawings supplied by the Fontaine Design Group.

Here is the final result.  Scroll down to see pictures taken during the construction process.

October 27, 05 - Here is the backplane for the model with the station frames, deck, sheer and waterline planks in place.  I will finish planking the model next week after I have gotten the three other models I am currently working on started.

Oct. 29, 05 - Today I finished planking the hull down to the waterline.  The next step is to plank the hull below the waterline.  That will most likely happen on Nov. 1 since I will be planking the Swan 36 model I am also working on tomorrow and I am going shopping for mounting board wood on Monday.

Nov. 2, 05 - Last night I finished planking the hull on this model.  Tonight I will fiberglass the deck.

Nov 4, 05 - Last night I fiberglassed the hull.  This morning I cut out and shaped the cherry mounting board.  The next step is to begin the filling/fairing/priming process on the model and to start varnishing the mounting board.

Nov 11, 05 - Over the last week I have filled, faired and primed this model.  This picture shows the model on its cherry mounting board (now with two coats of varnish).  I have also built the rudder.  This is just the first coat of primer.  At this stage the primer is used primarily to highlight flaws in the surface of the hull.  This afternoon I will begin the process of spot filling and repriming the hull until I have a surface that is ready for paint.

Nov 17, 05 - Tuesday I finished filling pin holes and put the final coats of primer on the model.  Yesterday, after I finished building my new paint booth, I sprayed the first coat of topsides paint onto the model.  Please note that this picture was taken under fluorescent lighting and the topsides color is not properly rendered.  I also put the 5th coat of varnish on the mounting board.  I expect to put 1-2 more coats of topsides paint on this model before it will be finished.  Also it looks like the mounting board will require two more coats of varnish to finish it off.  Consequently, this model should be finished in about 7-10 days.

Nov. 19, 05 - Last night I put the next to the last coat of varnish on the mounting board.  This morning I put the second paint on the topsides and also cut out and started varnishing the teak toe rail.  It looks like I will need one more coat of paint on the topsides before I paint the boot stripe.

Dec 2, 05 - It took 4 coats of paint, but I finally achieved success with the topsides paint and was able to paint the boot strip, install the teak toe rail and chocks and paint the bottom.  The model is now finished.
