Construction Details

Aug 5, 09 - Earlier this week I finished scaling the lines for this model.  Yesterday I cut out the backplane and laminated it with a layer of fiberglass cloth set in epoxy.  Today I made up the station molds, glued them and the deck to the backplane, planked the model down to the waterline and cut the transom in.  Over the next few days I will  finish planking the model.

Aug. 11, 09 - I finished planking the hull two days ago.  Because this boat has a bulwark, I am now working on finishing the deck.  When the deck is fair and ready for paint I will glue the toe rail on and then fiberglass the rest of the hull.  I will also cut the prop aperture in later today.

Aug. 14, 09 - Since my last update I filled and faired the deck, installed the bulwark, cut in the prop aperture and glassed the rest of the hull.  Today I cut out the mahogany mounting board and sanded it in preparation for varnish.  After I took the picture above I put the first of perhaps 10 coats of varnish on the mounting board.  This afternoon I started filling and fairing the hull to get it ready for painting.

Aug 19, 09 - I have now finished filling, fairing and primer painting the model.  I have also roughed out the rudder and have three coats of varnish on each side of the mounting board.  I will let the primer paint cure for a couple of days and then paint the topsides of the model.  In the mean time, I will continue varnishing the mounting board.

Aug. 27, 09 - I have now finished painting the topsides.  The mounting board is also nearly finished.  In addition I have finished shaping and painting the base color onto the rudder.  I will let the paint cure for a few days before I paint the whale strake and the bottom.

Sept. 2, 09 - The mounting board is now finished and I have painted the whale strake and bottom of the model.  All that remains is to put the teak trim on, which I will do either this afternoon or tomorrow.
