Bayfield 40 Simple Half Model - 1/2"=1'

This model is a simple half hull model of a Bayfield 40.  The model is built at a scale of 1/2"=1'.  Because the Bayfield drawings were lost in a fire back in the 80s, I drew my own lines from outline drawings and pictures.  The model is built for direct mounting on a yacht club wall without a mounting board.

Construction Details

March 14, 09 - Earlier this week I finished drawing and scaling the lines for this model.  Two days ago I cut out the backplane and laminated it with a layer of fiberglass cloth set in epoxy.  Today I made up the station molds, glued them and the deck to the backplane, planked the model down to the waterline and then cut the transom in.  Because this model is being built for direct mounting, the rudder is attached to the model in contrast to my normal practice which is to build a separate rudder.

March 16, 09 - Yesterday and today I worked on planking the hull below the waterline.  As you can see in the picture, that part of building this model is now finished.  I will now fiberglass the rest of the model and then start the filling/fairing/painting process.

March 21, 09 - Since my last update I have finished filling, fairing and priming the hull.  I have also cut the propeller aperture and rudder edges in.  The next step is to paing the model and put the teak trim on.
