Sabre 425 Detailed Half Model
LOA = 25"

This model is detailed half model of a 5' draft, winged keel,  Sabre 425.  The model was built from the original hull lines provided by Sabre Yachts and deck measurements and photographs I took on the boat.  The model was built to an overall length of 24", so the scale is approximately 0.588"=1'.  It is mounted on a satin varnished cherry board.  In contrast to most of the models I buld, this model is a port side, or left facing model.  The client chose this orientation so the model would show the shaft and prop, which Sabre offset to the port side of center.

Here is the completed model.  The following pictures show close-up views of the details.    All wood on the model is teak, finished in Cetol light and then overcoated with Cetol gloss.  Metals used were 316 stainless steel for rails, boarding ladder, winches,windlass and chain plates.  Cleats were fabricated from aluminum except for the rail cleat, which is stainless steel.

This view shows the bow detail.  A noteworthy detail is the windlass with its hawse pipe and chain rode.

Here is the midships view showing the cabin top and deck detail.  You can also see the wing keel quite well.

Here is the stern detail.  The hull side name graphic shows up well in this picture.  It was done with 24 ct gold leaf on vinyl.  I also quite like the wat the boarding ladder came out.  The ladder, the rails and the wheel on this model were made from 316 stainless.  Joints were silver soldered.  You can also see the 18" MaxProp with its blades in the feathered position.

Documentation of the Construction Process

Aug. 8, 07 - Today I finished planking the hull and winged keel.  The next phase is to fiberglass the hull and then start filling and fairing in preparation for painting.  Fiberglassing will take a while because each surface takes overnight for the epoxy to cure.

Aug. 19, 07 - Since my last update I have fiberglassed the hull, deck and keel and started applying the fairing compound.  I have about two coats of fairing compound to go before I will start primer painting.

Aug. 29, 07 - Last night I finished putting the first coats of primer paint on the model.  These coats of paint serve primarily to highlight flaws in the filling/fairing that require spot filling.  The model is sitting on its cherry mounting board.  After I took this picture I spot filled flaws on the model and repainted the topsides.  I also put the first coat of varnish on the mounting board.  I will continue working on the paint for a few days and then I will build the cabin house and cockpit.

Sept. 12, 07 - I have now roughed in the cabin house and cockpit.  The next step is to face the cabin and cockpit with styrene.  During that process I will add cockpit details such as cockpit seat hatches.

Sept. 25, 07 - Yesterday I finished facing  and primer painting the cabin house and cockpit.  The process took quite a while because of the relatively large number of different surfaces in the cockpit and the fact that the weather has been great so I have been out sailing quite a bit.  Tonight I will start putting the topcoats on the deck, cabin house and cockpit.  When that is done I will put the finish coats of flag blue on the topsides and then paint the boot stripes.

Oct. 15, 07 - The topsides paint is now finished.  I also painted the boot stripe, but I am not happy with it and will be redoing it before I paint the bottom.  If you look closely you can see that I have installed the primary and cabin top winches.  I have made a third winch that will go on the mast.

Oct. 29, 07 - I have now finished painting this model.  I have installed the in-hull ports, the boot and cove stripes and put on the name and hail. I also glued the model to the mounting board.  The next steps will be to build the mast and boom with their associated hardware and to install the ports.  Incidentally the rudder is made, but the paint wasn't dry when I took this picture.

Nov. 1, 07 - I have now built and installed the mast, boom and vang.  I also finished painting the rudder and installed it.  Tomorrow I will install the cowl vents and start building the traveller and main sheet system.

Nov. 15, 07 - There have been quite a few changes since my last update.  I have now finished rigging the boom.  I have also installed the toe rail, hatches, cowl vents and the stainless guards on the cowls and at the mast.  From here I will move to the cockpit by building and installing the cockpit ports, pedestal and wheel as well as the instruments on the pedestal and over the companionway.

Nov. 20, 07 - I have now built and installed the pedestal and wheel as well as the ports on the cabin house and the genoa tracks.  The installation of the ports really makes the model look more finished.  At this point I have 16 items left on my punch list, so this model should be finished by this time next week.

Nov. 25, 07 - This model is almost finished.  All I have left is the pedestal guard and the instruments on it and the sailing instruments located over the companionway.  I should have the model completed tomorrow.
