Ranger 33 Detailed Half Model (30" LOA)

This model is a Ranger 33 detailed half model.  The model was built to an overall length of 30".  I built it from lines I drew a year ago for another Ranger 33 model.  The model is mounted on a satin varnished mahogany board.  The following pictures show the details more closely.

Here is the stern view.  If you look closely you can see the gold outline on the name.  Visible details include the pedestal and wheel, Barient 23ST primary winch and Harken 16ST cabin top winch, the teak coaming board and companionway boards and the Signet wind instruments.

Here is the midships view.  Details include the Hall Quick Vang with its harken tacle, the companionway slide and the custom vinyl work on the hull.

This bow view shows the distinctive vinyl graphic on the hull, the toe rail and forward chock as well as the teak and stainless bow cleat.

Documentation of the Construction Process

Apr. 8, 07 - As of today I have laminated the backplane, cut out the station frames and planked the model down to the waterline.  Tomorrow I will cut the transon into the hull and start planking the model below the waterline.

Apr. 18, 07 - Yesterday I finished planking this model.  I used a NACA foil for the keel.  At the aft end of the hull you can see some of the replanking I did to shape the transom correctly.  I haven't built the rudder yet, because this model has a custom rudder and I still have to scale the client supplied drawings.  Over the next few days I will be fiberglassing the hull and then filling, fairing and priming before I build the cockpit and cabin house.

May 31, 07 - I have been a bit reticent in making up the updates for this model.  Since my last update I have fiberglassed, filled, faired and painted the hull.  I have also built the cabin house and cockpit and painted them along with the deck.  I have 1-2 coats of paint to go on this model before I paint the deck and cabin top non-skid.  When that is done I will start detailing.

Aug 5, 07 - I have been rather negligent in updating this web page.  As you can see I have made considerable progress.  Since my last update I have finished varnishing the mounting board, gotten the engraved nameplate, finished painting the model, installed the teak cockpit coaming and companionway boards, done the vinyl graphics on the hull (including the name and hail on the transom),  built and installed the mast and boom and mounted the model on the mounting board.  I will be ading the rest of the details to this model over the next 2-3 weeks.  The next steps will be to build the spray hood, cabin top hatch and the toe rail.  After that I will build and install the ports.

Aug. 12, 07 - This week I built the Companionway slide and storm hood, the forward hatch, the Barient 23ST primary winch, the Harken 16ST cabin top winch, and the boom vang with its tackle and running rigging.  Right now I am working on making up a list of the details that remain to be added.  A number of those details will be on the boat by the time I update this page next week.

Aug. 19, 07 - This week I worked exclusively on small details.  The largest changes are the competion of the toe rail with its chocks, the cabin top, teak hand rail and the pedestal and wheel.  I also finished the chain plates, flag bracket, exhaust, cleats, hawse pipe on the fore deck and the California registration numbers.  I also started putting the ports on the cabin house.  All 5 ports are made.  The rest will be installed after a some paint I applied today dries.  As of today my completion list is down to eight items.  Consequently I expect to finish this model withing the next week.
