Morris M36 Detailed Half Hull Model

This model is a fully detailed half model of a Morris M36 with mast and boom.  The model was built from the original lines supplied by Sparkman and Stephens, courtesy of Morris Yachts.  The model was built at a scale of 1.28" = 1', so it is 46" long.  The model is mounted on a 23"x53" cherry board.

Here is the model as a whole.  This is the first model I have built that included the boom and its major rigging.  I find that I like the result.

Here is the stern view.  You can see the cockpit details including the laid teak cockpit sole, the cockpit door, the steering pedestal with its five spoke teak wheel, the two lewmar 40ST winches, the main sheet, which is lead below the cockpit sole to the line clutch next to the primary winch, and other deck details.

Here is the midships view which shows the cabin house and the mast in more detail.  You can see the Hall quick vang, the lewmar 16ST halyard winch on the mast, the teak toe rail with its integral midships chock, the track for the self tacking jib and the foredeck hatch.    You also get another perspectice on the main sheet controls.

Here is the bow shot.  This picture gives a good feel for the deck as a whole.  The well just aft of the bow is where the furling drum sits.  The anchor gear is in the forward hatch.

Construction Details and History

March 4, 06 - I started scaling the plans for this model on March 2.  Yesterday after I finished scaling and printing the drawings, I cut out and laminated the backplane.  Today I cut out the station frames and glued them to the laminated backplane.  After that I glued the cambered deck to the station frames and then applied the sheer and waterline planks.  Over the next few days I will finish planking the hull and then fiberglass it for strength.  The yard stick in the picture shows that this is a large model indeed.  The model is sitting on the three cherry planks I will laminate together to make the 23"x53" backboard.  The center plank is a bit darker than the others because it has been exposed to light a bit longer.  The three planks will look the same after the laminated backboard has been planed and sanded.

Morris M36 Half Model

March 6, 06 - Yesterday I started laminating the cherry mounting board by glueing two of the three planks together.  Tomorrow I will finish the lamination of the 23"x53" mounting board.  Today I got back to working on the model itself and finished planking the hull and the keel fin.  I have not yet shaped the keel bulb, because the Sparkman and Stephens drawings did not include the details of the bulb.  Consequently, I will run over to Morris Yachts tomorrow to measure the bulb on a shaol draft M36 they have there.  Once I have those measurements I will shape the keel.  When I finish shaping the keel bulb I will fiberglass the hull.

March 11, 06 - Late last week I went over to Morris Yachts where I took more pictures of the latest shoal draft Morris M36 and also measured the keel bulb.  When I got home I built the keel bulb on the model and then started fiberglassing the hull.  As of this morning the hull is fully glassed and I am ready to start filling and fairing the surface.  The picture above shows the fiberglassed hull.  That will take a few days.

March 17, 06 - I have now nearly finished filling, fairing and priming the hull.  The picture shows the model after the first coat of Awlgrip primer has been applied and then mostly sanded off.  I will let that cure until tomorrow and then apply the final coat.  Once the primer is fully cured I will build the cockpit and cabin house.   After that the model will go over to Morris Yachts where it will be awlgrip painted.  After I took this picture I epoxied the third piece of the cherry board to the rest of the mounting board.

March 23, 06 - Since my last update I have put the second and I think final coat of awlgrip primer on the hull.  I have also started building the cabin house and cockpit as shown in the picture above.  I still have to build the starboard cockpit seat and the winch platform in the cockpit and do a bit of shaping of the coaming.  After that is done I will face the cockpit and cabin house with styrene to outline the ports and give a good surface for painting.  Then I will install the storm hood on the cabin house and paint the deck.  After the deck is painted the model will go out to Morris Yachts for awlgrip painting.  In addition, I finished laminating the cherry mounting board and put the first coat of varnsih on it.

March 26, 06 - Over the past three days I have finished building the cockpit and cabin house.  Right after I took this picture I primer painted the deck, cabin house and cockpit.  Right after I took this picture I primer painted the cockpit, deck and cabin house.  Over the next few days I will reprime the model below the waterline and paint the deck, cabin house and cockpit.  When that is done, the model will go over to Morris Yachts to have the topsides sprayed with Morris Blue AwlGrip.

April 13, 06 - The model spent most of the time since my last update over at Morris Yachts in the awlGrip bay.  I picked it up this morning.  The Morris Blue AwlGrip came out very nicely.  I have to let that paint cure for a week or so before I can tape it to paint the boot stripe and the deck non-skid.  So, over the next few dats I will start working on some of the deck details and on planking the teak decking on the cockpit sole.

April 23, 06 - Since my last update I have painted the non-skid on the deck and in the cockpit.  Over the last three days I have been putting the teak onto the model.  Above you can see the toe rail, cockpit coaming and cabin eyebrow.  I have built the teak dorade box, but won't install it until it is fully varnished.  Tomorrow I plan to paint the boot stripe.  I won't be putting the cove stripe on until I have finished varnishing the toe rail.  In this picture, the toe rail has only one coat of varnish.  I have 8-10 coats to go.  After I took this picture I put the first coat of varnish on the rest of the teak.

April 24, 06 - Today I painted the boot stripe.  The top edge came out a bit ragged, so I will reapint the stripe in a few days after the first coat of paint is thoroughly cured.  From here on, I will be building deck and cockpit details and varnishing the teak.

May 22, 06 - It has been nearly a month since my last update.  During that time I went away for a two week vacation.  After my return I continued varnishing the teak on the model.  I also built all the other teak parts and started varnishing them.  As of today all the teak on the model now has 9 coats of varnish.  All the teak is installed except for the dorade box and the teak part on the companionway slide.  The companionway slide will go on the model tomorrow.  The teak I used for the dorade box was a bit mor porous that the rest of the teak, so I still have 2-3 coats of varnish to go on it before it will be finished.  The obvious changes between this picture and the one immediately above are the chocks in the toe rail, the gold cove stripe, the cabin top hand rail and the ports.  I have also coated the deck and cabin top non-skid areas with flat clear coat and planked the teak cockpit sole.  Tomorrow I will install the companionway slide and the foredeck hatch.  The teak wheel is still a work in progress.  Over the next few days I will build the rest of the deck and cockpit detail and start work on the stub mast and boom.

June 1, 06 - Since my last update I have been working on a variety of components.  As you can see in the picture above, I have now built and installed the foredeck hatch, the companionway slide.  I have also finished the dorade box and machined and installed the three winches.  I have also built the basic mast and boom although I still have lots of detail components to install on each.  The steering pedestal is now built as is the teak wheel.  I still have a couple of coats of varnish to go on the wheel.  Over the next couple of weeks I will gradually build and install the various detail components.

June 11, 06 - The modle is now nearly finished.  Since my last update I have finished varnishing the mounting board.  I have also put the bottom paint on the model and mounted the model on the mounting board.  In addition, I have added most of the details.  I still have 13 details left, the most significant being the sail drive.  Other remaining details include a triple line clutch, a couple of cleats, an instrument pod, cockpit cushions, the running lights and a touchup of the varnish.

June 11, 06 (cont.) - This picture shows some of the deck detail.  Here you can see the steering pedestal with its teak wheel, the teak cockpit sole, and the various cleats and chain plates on the deck.  The picture was taken in bright sunlight, to the contrasting color non-skid areas on the deck don't show up.
