LeComte Northeast 38 MKII with Spade Rudder

This is a fully detailed half model.  Because the lines for the LeComte wereare not available from Trip Yacht design, the model was built from the lines I drew based on outline drawings, pictures of LeComte 38s and another contemporaneous Bill Tripp design I do have lines for.  The model is mounted on a satin varnished birch board.

Construction Details

Sept. 16, 2006 - Yesteray I cut out the backplane for the model and fiberglassed it.  This morning before I went out for a weekend sail I cut out the station molds, glued them to the backplane, installed the deck and the waterline planks.  Monday I will get going on planking the rest of the hull.

Sept. 18, 2006 - Last night after I got back from sailing and this morning I worked on planking this model.  As of early this afternoon the model is fully planked and I am ready to start fiberglassing the hull.

Sept. 24, 06 - Since my last update I have been fiberglassing the model.  I finished glassing the model yesterday.  Today I trimmed the fiberglass and cleaned the amine blush off of it.  After this picture was taken I put the first of 3-4 coats of polyester fairing compound on the model.  Over the next few days I will finish filling, fairing and priming the model and then I will paint the topsides.

Sept. 27, 06 - Today I finished sanding off the third coat of fairing compound and painted the bottom and topsides with primer.  As usual, this first coat of primer serves to highlight flaws in the surface that I will fill before I reprime the model.  Once I am happy with the surfaces, I will paint the topsides and deck.

Oct. 5, 06 - Since my last update I have finished spot filling the model and reprimed it.  In addition I modified the waterline to match pictures of the specific boat I am modelling.  Tomorrow I will start building the cabin house and cockpit.  I also plan to put the first coat of flag blue paint on the topsides.

Oct. 8, 06 - Since my last update I have put the first coat of flag blue paint on the topsides.  I have also roughed in the cabin house and laid out the guidelines for cutting the cockpit into the hull.  Tomorrow I will finish building the cabin house and the cockpit.  When that is done I will repaint the topsides.  I expect to put 4-5 coats of paint on the topsides before I get an acceptable finish.

Oct 11, 06 - I have now finished building and facing the cockpit and cabin house.  After I took this picture I filled joints and cracks.  This afternoon I will primer paint the deck, cabin house and cockpit.  If the surfaces are OK after priming I will paint the deck, house and cockpit tomorrow.  The model now has its second coat of flag blue on the topsides.  Based on how the paint is building, I expect to need 2-3 more coats before the topsides will be finished.

Oct. 20, 06 - Since my last update I have painted the deck and cabin house.  I have also gotten to coat 4 on the topsides.  I am hoping to put the final coat of paint on the topsides tonight.  In addition I have also cut out and started varnishing the birch mounting board.  The mounting board is quite large because I will be putting the stub mast and boom on this model.  Today, after sanding the topsides in preparation for painting, I cut out and started varnishing the teak toe rail, eyebrow and cockpit coaming.  I will install those pieces of teak when I have finished varnishing them.

Nov. 1, 06 - You can finally see some changes in this model.  It took 6 coats, but I finally got an acceptable result on the topsides and was able to polish the finish to a nice gloss.  After that I painted the boot stripe and bottom and today I installed the teal toe rail, eyebrow and cockpit coamings.  The mounting board is also ready for its final coat of varnish, which it will get tonight.  Either tomorrow or Friday I will mount the model and then work on the rest of the details.

Nov. 4, 06 - Since my last update I have finished varnishing the mounting board and mounted the model.  The model is relatively low on the mounting board to make room for the stub mast and boom I will be installing.  I also cut the cockpit coaming down a little as the client pointed out that it looked a little too high where it met the cabin house.  Over the next few days I will install the ports and start detailing the deck.  I am also building the teak hatched and dorade boxes for the cabin top and deck.

Nov. 9, 06 - I have now installed the ports and deadlights and started work on the teak details for the cabin house and deck. The installation of the ports really changes the look of the model.  You can see the two cabin top reak hatches as well as the spray hood for the companionway.  The spray hood is only in place for the picture.  After I took this picture I removed it and put the first coat of varnish on.  I have also built the aft deck hatch and am varnishing the teak, cabin-top, hand rails.

Nov. 18, 06 - Since my last update I have mostly been working on a different model.  However, I finished varnishing all the teak and mounted it on the model today.  I also built the mast and boom.  Next week I will start detailing the model.  That will include building the pedestal and wheel, the bow iron with its anchor roller and chocks, the running rigging and other hardware on the boom and the other deck hardware on this boat.

Nov. 29, 06 - Despite the lack of recent updates I have been working on this model a bit every day.  As you can see I have now installed the primary and secondary winches, the cabin top cowl, the pedestal and wheel, the genoa turning block (not shown), the bow iron and the main sheet.  Tomorrow I will finish off the rest of the main boom rigging (vang and various cleats). and start work on the anchor and roller.

Dec. 2, 06 - The model is now nearly finished.  Since my last update I have built the anchor and hawse pipe, finished off the boom vang, installed the chocks and chain plates and made up the genoa track with its two turning blocks and a track cleat.  All I have left to do is to build and install two small cowl vents, the anchor chain and the nameplate.  Chain is the one thing I don't build myself, but I have it on order and expect to get it early in the coming week.
